BC's iconic wild salmon got a little help from Canadian icon William Shatner when he addressed the media and public via video recently. The occasion was a press conference organized by NDP MP Fin Donnelly - to kick off a new campaign for his proposed private member's bill to help protect wild salmon from the impacts of open net salmon farms. Shatner voiced his support for Bill C-518, which would force open net salmon farms to switch to closed-contanment technology - that separates farmed from wild fish. Three minutes.

The New York Times has a report today on an effort to get FDA approval for genetically-modified Atlantic salmon that grow to maturity twice as fast as standard fish. Wait till a few of those get loose and start competing with our wild stocks. Unbelievable.
